National Organization for Marriage Comes to Indy - ISD Board Member Helps Organize Counter-Rally

NOM hate signThe National Organization for Marriage, aided locally by the Indiana Family Institute, brought its hate tour to Indianapolis recently. ISD board member Aaron Schaler couldn't stand by and let them go unchallenged. He and some friends quickly put together a Facebook page for a counter rally at the Statehouse to answer NOM's message of fear.

Nearly 250 LGBT-supportive folks showed up for the counter rally. About 40 people watched the NOM show, but nearly half of that number was staff or speakers at the event.

A number of websites gave great coverage to the rally, including The Bilerico Project, Indy Democrat, and many others. Particularly galling was the sign, pictured here, suggesting the solution to same-sex marriage is to lynch the gays.

We need your help to continue countering NOM's cynical message of hate for LGBT families. Please consider joining ISD or giving a donation to say thank you to Aaron for showing NOM we won't stand by while they try to demonize us, our friends or our families.

Get out your walking shoes and warm up your voice because it's that time of year again! It's canvassing and phone banking season for the upcoming fall elections. We're collecting schedules from the candidates and we're looking for volunteers. We're focusing mainly on the Indiana House this season. If you haven't already, please read this blog post about why keeping the House Blue is so important this year.

There are multiple opportunities every day between now and November, so drop us a line using our contact form and let us know when and where you'd like to volunteer. We'll get you in touch with the campaign(s) needing the most help and make sure your volunteer time is well spent.

Below are the schedules we've received from various campaigns. We'll update this page as we get more schedules in hand, so check back often!
